How far back should a resume go? Choose relevant history

Avoid a rigid year cutoff

A fixed number of years cannot account for every role. A specialist may need an older project to demonstrate a rare skill; someone changing fields may need transferable work from an earlier position. An employer application form may ask for a complete history even when your resume is selective. Answer the form accurately rather than treating it like an edited marketing document.

How many jobs should you list?

Include enough roles to show relevant experience and understandable progression. If three recent jobs provide the needed evidence, six older entries may add little. You can compress earlier positions to employer, title, and dates when their details repeat newer work. Keep a fuller private record to complete applications and prepare for interviews.

Handle repeated duties and gaps honestly

Do not change dates or combine separate employers into a fictional continuous role. If you include a career break, a concise factual label may be enough. Focus on relevant learning, projects, or volunteering only when they actually occurred. You do not need to disclose private personal information to explain every month on a resume.

Review the tradeoff

For each older entry, ask what the reader learns that is not already established. Retain distinctive scope, experience, or qualifications. Remove detail that crowds out more useful recent evidence. Then check whether your dates and titles still tell a coherent, accurate story.
